NEW MIA SAFETY VIDEO FOCUSES
HOW TO READY FOR OSHA VISIT
CLEVELAND, OH., OCTOBER 4, 2005 A new safety video that zeroes in on what OSHA inspectors look for when visiting natural stone fabrication facilities has been produced by the Marble Institute of America (MIA) and funded through a generous grant from Park Industries and Schechner Lifson Corporation.
To be released at StonExpo in Las Vegas, October 19-22, the new video, called "The Basics of OSHA Compliance for the Natural Stone Industry," was produced with the assistance of both state and federal OSHA officials.
Taped primarily at Stockett Tile and Granite Company in Scottsdale, Arizona, and US Granite & Marble in Westlake, Ohio, the program features sound bites from OSHA representatives in both states.
The video contains a brief history OSHA and then details the most likely violations that can result in state and federal citations.
"The OSHA video is an important addition to MIA's ongoing safety initiative," said Gary Distelhorst, executive vice president of MIA, an international association with more than 1300 members.
"OSHA is very proactive in the natural stone industry, especially when it comes to exposure to silica," he said. "But recently, Federal OSHA released a new bulletin dealing with the hazards of slab handling in the industry and so there could be new efforts to examine the safety efforts of our industry."
Distelhorst explained that the new video makes it clear that the best way to prepare for an OSHA inspection is to practice compliance 365 days a year. "That goes for both management and the workforce. OSHA has one goal - safety in the workplace and that calls for a working partnership between state and federal OSHA and the companies in the industry."
With completion of the OSHA video and a new program on slab handling safety, MIA will have a total of four safety programs, the centerpiece of a safety initiative launched in 2004.
